Tri-Level: A Knight’s Squire

Christy Vutam | November 23, 2013

My USTA Tri-Level tennis team finished 2nd in the area tournament last weekend. It’s the single greatest thing in the universe that has ever happened to me*. I think I’m supposed to add “tennis-wise” to the end of that sentence. Oh, well.

*Happened to me – as in lucking out with having awesome players who played and won while I sat in my cozy chair and sipped on grapes.

On Tuesday, the powers that be emailed out to everyone a congratulatory note that listed all the winners and runner-ups. I was stoked. The names of all the fearsome Grand Wizards in my area decorated that document. And then there was my name right alongside those luminaries. I couldn’t help but grin from ear to ear when I saw it.

I got all ready to print the email out so I could put it on a plaque and hang it in my Weekend Tennis shrine when I spotted it.

My name was misspelled.

Sigh. Yup, that about sums it up.

Sigh. Yup, that about sums it up.

This was the second time my name was spelled incorrectly for this tournament alone. You know whose names aren’t spelled wrongly? Grand Wizards. I’m just playing. Nobody else’s name gets misspelled. Forget wizard-with-training-wheels. I’m just hoping to someday be a knight’s squire is how low I am on the totem pole in my area’s tennis world.

Well, it all worked out. The powers that be sent me a corrected email, and it looked even more beautiful the second time around.

It's...so...awesome!

It’s…so…awesome!

Did I tear up a little bit when I saw it? Whhaaatttt…

Huge thanks to the players on my 4.5-4.0-3.5 Tri-Level team for making me look good. You guys did a tremendous job in advancing all the way to the finals. Thank you so much for saying yes to playing on our team. Here’s hoping we receive the wildcard to go to Sectionals so we can keep the Sangria flowing! 😀
